I adore waffles and have been experimenting with flavors. These Blueberry and Orange Waffles are a new family favorite and often made as a special treat.
There is something wonderfully comforting about a waffle. They are easy to make and make a delicious start to the day—or a treat any time you fancy one. They work well fresh, cold, or reheated. I used to pack them in my lunchbox and warm them up at work. “Waffle Wednesdays” became our way to celebrate midweek.
Blueberry and Orange Waffles
Blueberry and orange might sound like an unusual pairing, but it works beautifully. I substituted orange for lemon and was surprised at how well the citrus lift combined with sweet blueberries. The orange adds a subtle freshness that complements the fruitiness in the finished waffles.

I treated myself to an inexpensive Vonshef waffle maker — a brilliant investment. It takes a moment to warm up, so switch it on before you finish the batter. Hot waffles with fruit and maple syrup are a wonderful way to start the weekend.
The delicate orange flavor is subtle but noticeable, and if you pair the waffles with Nutella you’ll get that chocolate-orange vibe which is delightful.
What are your favorite toppings?
I usually stick to fresh fruit, but on more indulgent days I love bacon with a splash of balsamic, or yogurt with pomegranate seeds. Smoked salmon with cream cheese is an unexpected but tasty savory option. For a celebratory brunch I’ll add a scoop of ice cream to a hot waffle, extra sprinkles, and plenty of fresh berries—raspberries or strawberries work especially well.
