Ingredients for this recipe

  • Black Tea Bags – Use 7 regular or 4 family-size bags for a robust brew that balances the sweetness. Any brand works, Lipton is a reliable choice.
  • Water – 7 cups for the tea plus 2 cups for the peach syrup.
  • Fresh Peaches – Sliced and simmered to make a fresh peach syrup that brings authentic fruit flavor.
  • Cane or Granulated Sugar – Sweetens the peach syrup without overpowering the tea.
  • Peach Slices – Optional garnish that adds color and a bit of extra peach flavor.

Tips for making southern peach sweet tea

Don’t press the tea bags after steeping; squeezing can release bitter tannins. Follow the steeping time below for a well-balanced flavor.

To smooth any bitterness, stir in a pinch (about 1/8 teaspoon) of baking soda when the tea is finished. It can help reduce tannins and clarity issues.

Filtered water yields the cleanest flavor, but properly boiled tap water works fine as well.

After cooking the peaches, strain the syrup through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth and press the fruit to extract all the juice. This makes a silky smooth peach syrup for the tea.

Commonly Asked Questions

Can I use canned or frozen peaches instead of fresh?

Yes. Fresh peaches give the best flavor, but canned (drained) or thawed frozen peaches will work in a pinch.

Can I make it less sweet?

Absolutely. Reduce the sugar in the peach syrup to suit your taste.

How long does peach iced tea last in the fridge?

Stored in a covered container, it stays fresh about 4–5 days. Stir before serving.

What kind of tea works best for sweet tea?

Black tea is traditional and provides the strongest base. For a lighter variation try green tea, or use hibiscus for a floral twist.
