Easy Keto Philly Cheesesteak Skillet

This Philly cheesesteak skillet comes from a new keto cookbook produced by CarbManager, the popular keto macro tracker. The book pairs nicely with their tracking app, but you don’t need the app to enjoy the recipes.

Why I liked the Carb Manager Cookbook

  • More than 100 recipes available.
  • Each recipe includes a photo and clear, detailed instructions.
  • Recipes list macros and include a QR code so you can track them in the Carb Manager app.
  • A helpful Quick & Easy section for fast dinners and a section dedicated to meal prep and batch cooking.
  • Notably many vegetarian keto recipes, more than you usually find in a single keto cookbook.
  • Easy-to-read icons identify recipes that are Dairy Free, Paleo, Vegetarian, 30 Minutes or Less, or higher than 6g net carbs.

Easy Keto Philly Cheesesteak Skillet

I chose this recipe because it’s a family favorite and simple to adapt. Since I often follow a mostly carnivore approach, the recipe is easy to tweak while still satisfying everyone at the table.
This skillet version captures the classic cheesesteak flavors with far less effort and far fewer carbs.

Ingredients you will need for this recipe

  • Flank steak
  • Olive oil
  • Salt and pepper
  • Onion powder and garlic powder
  • Mushrooms
  • Green bell pepper
  • Provolone cheese

An oven-proof skillet works best; a two-handled cast iron pan makes moving the skillet to and from the oven much easier.

Tips and tweaks for this low-carb skillet

Great family recipes are adaptable. Here are a few easy variations to try:

  • Use leftover steak or roast beef. Thinly slice it and skip most of the searing—just warm through with the vegetables.
  • Serve the skillet on toasted keto buns or on chaffles for a sandwich-style meal.
  • If you don’t have provolone, a combination of cheddar and mozzarella works well.
  • If you don’t own an oven-proof skillet, transfer everything to a 9 x 12 casserole dish for the baking step.
  • For a carnivore-friendly version, omit the green peppers and mushrooms.

This easy keto Philly cheesesteak skillet is a quick weeknight meal that comes together in about 30 minutes with roughly 2 net carbs. Family friendly and cooked in one pan for easy cleanup.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb flank steak
  • 1 1/2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp pepper
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 5 white mushrooms, sliced
  • 1/2 green bell pepper, diced
  • 6 slices provolone cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Combine salt, pepper, onion powder and garlic powder in a small bowl and set aside.
  3. Thinly slice the flank steak across the grain about 1/8 inch thick.
  4. Heat olive oil in a cast iron skillet over medium-high heat.
  5. Add the steak, sprinkle with the spice mixture, and allow it to sear without moving for 2–3 minutes.
  6. Turn heat to high and flip the steak every couple minutes until well cooked and slightly crispy, about 10 more minutes.
  7. Transfer the cooked steak to a plate, leaving the pan juices. Add the mushrooms and peppers to the skillet and cook about 3 minutes. (Skip this step for a carnivore version.)
  8. Remove the skillet from heat, return the steak to the pan and mix with the vegetables.
  9. Arrange the cheese slices over the skillet so the filling is covered.
  10. Place the skillet in the oven for about 5 minutes to melt the cheese.
  11. Optional: Broil 2–3 minutes to brown the top if desired.

Notes

  • Leftover steak or roast beef can be thinly sliced and used—save time by skipping most searing.
  • Serve on toasted keto buns or chaffles for sandwiches.
  • Substitute cheddar and mozzarella if you don’t have provolone.
  • If you lack an oven-proof skillet, combine ingredients in a 9 x 12 casserole dish for the baking step.
  • For a carnivore-style meal, omit the peppers and mushrooms.
