Ingredients

  • 1 ½ c powdered sugar
  • 1 c unsalted butter
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 tsp almond extract
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp cream of tartar
  • 2 ½ c flour

Buttercream Frosting

  • 1 c unsalted butter softened
  • 3-4 c powdered sugar SIFTED
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 4 tbsp heavy cream
  • red food coloring

Instructions

  • Mix the dough ingredients together in a mixer until combined.
  • Drop rounded spoonfuls of dough onto ungreased baking sheets, spacing them a couple inches apart.
  • Bake at 350°F for 10–12 minutes, or until the edges are just starting to brown.
  • Transfer to a rack and cool completely before frosting.

Buttercream Frosting

  • Beat softened butter with the paddle attachment on medium speed for a few minutes until smooth.
  • Add 3 cups sifted powdered sugar and mix on low until incorporated.
  • Increase speed to medium, add vanilla, salt, and 2 tablespoons heavy cream, and beat about 3 minutes until light and fluffy.
  • If the frosting is too stiff, add remaining heavy cream 1 tablespoon at a time. If it’s too thin, add the remaining powdered sugar until it reaches the desired consistency.
  • Tint with a few drops of food coloring if desired, frost the cooled cookies, and finish with sprinkles.
