Probiotics for Clear, Glowing Skin: What Works and Why

You probably already know that taking a daily probiotic can support a healthy immune system, but applying probiotics topically can also help balance and hydrate the skin. Certain probiotic strains are effective at supporting the skin’s natural barrier and moisture levels.

An imbalance of gut bacteria can affect skin health. Excess harmful bacteria in the digestive tract may contribute to inflammation and result in dry, irritated skin or exacerbate conditions such as acne, rosacea, and eczema. Because chronic skin conditions are increasingly common, scientific interest in the gut-skin connection and the skin microbiome has grown significantly in recent years.

Research supports the potential skin benefits of probiotics. A 2016 study of otherwise healthy volunteers with diagnosed dry skin reported that daily topical application of a specific Lactobacillus strain for four weeks improved the skin barrier, reduced transepidermal water loss, and increased hydration.

A 2017 article published in Dermatology Practical and Conceptual reviewed evidence linking diet, gut health, and rosacea. The authors concluded that individuals with rosacea may benefit from nurturing a healthy gut microbiome and consuming a fiber-rich, prebiotic diet to support gut and skin health.

Other research has found that topical probiotics show promise for treating acne and reducing skin redness. While more clinical trials are needed to define optimal strains and formulations, available studies suggest topical probiotics can be a useful adjunctive approach for certain skin concerns.

In addition to topical options, consuming probiotic-rich foods or taking an oral probiotic supplement containing Lactobacilli or Bifidobacterium strains may support skin health from the inside out. A balanced diet that includes prebiotic fiber can help nourish beneficial gut bacteria, which in turn may positively influence the skin.

Here are a couple of topical products to consider:

Life-Flo Probiotic Skin Cream — A hydrating cream for face and body formulated with Lactobacillus plantarum, a strain shown in studies to enhance skin hydration and support signs of aging.

Andalou Naturals Probiotic + C Renewal Cream — A brightening cream containing a probiotic complex plus vitamin C and other skin-supporting ingredients, suitable for daily application to the face and neck.
