Moist Chocolate Banana Bundt Cake Recipe for Dessert

The most deliciously moist chocolate banana bundt cake is here. This new take on my banana bundt cake swaps in rich chocolate for a decadent flavor and yields a cake that’s truly heavenly.

I replaced the usual banana/white cake mix with a dark chocolate fudge cake mix and added plenty of chocolate chips to deepen the chocolate taste. The result is a gorgeous, ultra-moist chocolate banana bundt cake that our family has made several times since first trying it.

The Cake Mix Switch Trick

In previous versions I used a banana or yellow cake mix as the base. For this version, a chocolate cake mix pairs beautifully with banana — the two flavors complement each other perfectly. To boost chocolate throughout, I used both mini and regular semi-sweet chocolate chips.

What Size Bundt Pan Should I Use?

Aim for a 12-cup bundt pan or one of similar capacity so the batter fills the pan nicely. I used a standard pan and have also tried a couple of different shapes with good results. Use whatever bundt pan you have that holds a similar volume.

Ingredients for Chocolate Banana Bundt Cake

This bundt cake is simple and practical — most kitchens already have the ingredients. It’s a one-bowl, hand-whisk recipe so there’s minimal cleanup and plenty of family-friendly fun while baking.

Ingredients for cake

You’ll need:

  • 3 large eggs (room temperature best)
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 2–3 medium ripe smashed bananas (about 1 cup; not fully black but well-ripened)
  • 1 cup buttermilk or whole milk
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 15.25 oz box chocolate cake mix (dark chocolate fudge works especially well)
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (a mix of mini and regular size is nice)

How to Tell When the Bundt Cake Is Done

Check that the center is fully set before removing the cake from the oven. I typically wait for the timer, open the oven, and lightly press the top of the cake—if it springs back it’s done; if it’s still jiggly, it needs more time. I avoid overreliance on the toothpick method since it can encourage overbaking and drier results.

Optional: For a decadent finish, pour a chocolate ganache over the cooled bundt. Melt 1 cup chocolate chips with 1 cup heavy cream, stir until smooth, cool slightly, then pour generously over the cake.
